Aaron Moffatt
Aaron Moffat is an interesting guy - he's young and multi-exceptional. Early on I posted a video of him playing violin in concert (click here) and you must check out his digital art... it's amazing!
Absinthe Rose
A while back I caught a punk band called the Hollowbodys at the Cattlemens in Rogue River. There I met Kimbo - Absinthe Rose is her solo project. Follow the link and it will take you to her MySpace page. I urge you to have a listen to some of her songs. I think we have a talent to watch here. Kimbo has an intriguing stage presence - her songs are dark and honest and her vocals tell her stories perfectly. Now if your in favor of bicycle helmuts and "Safe and Sane" fireworks this probably ain't for you. On the other hand if you like a flavor that's unprocessed - unsugar coated, well then...
Adrian Fringe
Adrian Fringe is Paul Hendershot and Cammie Clarke. This duo has produced three CD's and offers an interesting mix of original rock and Celtic pieces. Pictured is their latest CD Where We Belong They're two other
CD's Twisted Tree and Gregorian Plants are available on the duo's website. Many of you will know Paul as a teacher. His Hendershot guitar lesson shop has been a fixture in Grants Pass for years.
Alice Di Micele
One of the Rogue Valley's most celebrated recording artists Alice Dimecele plays w/ band or solo/acoustic. Her latest CD ebb and flow (pictured) was released in 2008 and produced by Rob Seifert Gage with Rob Kohler on bass, Brian West on drums, and some special guests. From her website: "The first thing you'll notice about Alice DiMicele is her voice. With a five-octave range that is intense, sensual, rich and soulful, DiMicele has been known to turn a noisy bar silent within a few notes. Her warm presence and humor disarm and create a rare intimacy between audience and performer.
The Blues Dusters
New to me the The Blues Dusters are a band built around
a pair of blues veterans, Johnnie O. (John Nelson) from Chicago via Denver and L.A., and Grif (Leonard Griffie) from L.A. via L.A. They're locals now. They've got a CD available and a great website and some gigs coming up. Recently these guys have been appearing "unplugged" at the Stagecoach Saloon in Jacksonville.
Broadway Phil and the Shouters
Another "Top Act" the Shouters are Phil Newton (Broadway Phil)on vocals anf harmonica - Gary Davis on bass - Jake Thompson on guitar - Dave Day on guitar - and the original Shouter Dave Mathieu on drums. The Shouters latest CD Shout Back (pictured) is out and available - here - on Rogue and Poet. The Shouters are classic R and B - a little Delta, gritty and honest to the core - that said, they work it as a club band flawlessly.
B Wishes
To the rest of the world she's best known for her work in the band Toyes a group widely recognized for their hit anthem "Smoke Two Joints". With the Toyes "B" has released several albums blending strong social and political content with a wicked sense of humor and infectious reggae-rock grooves. The word is she is back in studio with the Toyes and a new CD is slated for this spring.
Now apart from the Toyes Rogue Valley audiences can find "B" working consistently as a soloist or with the B Wishes band. She also has a B Wishes CD that was released just this past September titled "The Truth that Works for Me". Says B "This album is a snapshot of what was happening in my life at the time I wrote these songs, and this particular collection is so stylistically eclectic, that I hope it says to the world that I'm a songwriter committed to producing what the Universe sends me."
As with all the artists listed here you can always find out were "B" is playing by checking my Live Music Calendar or click the link and go to B's website for more information.
Crossfire
Crossfire offers up classic rock, country and blues. The band has been in the studio and sent me an original song called Bidin' My Time - it's the quinessential blues/rock bar band anthem. Check it out on the sites Music Player. A four piece, Crossfire is: are Neal Peters on Lead Guitar Jeff Hatfield on Bass & Vocals - Leo Hager on Percussion & Vocals and Micah Brennan on Guitar & Vocals
Cyd Smith
It was photographer and local music historian Jonas Lohr of NowThen photo graphs that first turned me on to Cyd Smith. He even gave me a prized CD of her work. Well I also found Cyd's MySpace page. She has six of her songs posted on her player and I spent some of the morning enjoying. The songs are wonderful - rootsy - jazzy and well crafted. I particularly liked cuts three and four. "Everything I got is Broken" is playful lyrically and musically, and "When I Sing the Blues" may be one of the finest lady sings the blues tunes ever. Her voice is silky and superbly expressive. The link is in red above or find her under Bands and Musicians in the Gallery.
Dandelion Jo
"Dandelion Jo" is a trio (sometimes duo) featuring the sweet vocals of Liz Jones with well balanced, solid accompaniment from Dan Dosier on mandolin and fiddle and Joe Porto on upright bass. The music is pure americana - lively roots and traditional folk rhythms played to please.
Dead Sea Pedestrians
Of all the bands I've yet to catch these guys are near the top of my list. What I do know is that these guys are gigging steady at some of the valleys top clubs. If you stop by their MySpace page (linked above) you can hear some of their music. Their originals are great, modern - relevant rock pieces. One gets that the group poccesses an irreverant and youthful exuberance. One can only hope... The band is: Dan Wood on Vocals and Guitars - Ben Jennings on Vocals and Guitars - Will McCarthy on Guitars - Luke Mattern on Percussion and Stephanie Herche on Vocals and Percussion.
David Bolen
He's the drummer for two top tier Rogue Valley bands; RazzaMoJazz, which he co-founded, was assembled in '08 with jazz sax sensation and Grammy Award winner Brandon Fields (The Rippingtons, Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, George Benson...many more). David also shares the stage with notable rock/blues guitarist Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles, Kenny Loggins, Marc Cohn, David Crosby...more) in the rock/blues group The Rogue Suspects.
David is also an award-winning author and lecturer. His books "The Essense of Living" and "How You See it - How You Don't" have been published internationally. He is as well the Founder and CEO of Executive Life Solutions.com For personal development assistance with David that's the link to click. Man... what a guy!!
David Modica
In David Modica we have a heady combination of gifted guitarist and composer. He does his work on acoustic guitar and the songs I've heard have a haunting edge and and are both complex and atmospheric. His song "Because" is on this sites music player and is an exceptional piece. He is playing locally and he tours the coast from time to time, he'll be performing at some California venues in May and July. While his website is linked above you can hear more samples of Davids music at his MySpace page. Presently David has three CD's for sale and they are on his website linked at the top. His CD's are Stillness and Movement - Timeless and his newest offering Acoustic Earth - Electric Sky. All of these CD's were released in 2008.
Device
DEVICE is: Bill Rusnick on bass and vocals - Wally Ignatoski on guitar and vocals - Jeff on drums.
Says Bill: We are a three piece alternative cover band with some classic rock mixed in.
mostly collective soul, seether stuff. We like to keep it danceable! We are out of Eagle Point. We have been together for couple of years, playing the valley and beyond, from Prospect to Gold Hill. We are a very upbeat band, and with Jeff(Steve)driving the beat on drums our songs really pump you up, and Bill and Wallys vocal harmonies will git ya!
Dos Gardenias
Dos Gardenias features the smooth sounds of Latin jazz with Anthony Melendez (guitar, flute, cello, piccolo, vocals), and Andy Pimentel (keyboards, bass, sax, accordion, guitar, vocals). Recently they brought in vocalist Ann Pimental (singing in English, Spanish and Portuguese), and drummer/percussionist Abe Perea, to expand the scope of the band. All told, they cover bossa nova, samba, classical Spanish guitar, classic Cuban jazz, and folk -- along with their own original Latin and jazz tunes. A whole lot of color from just four musicians!
Douglas Ross
A noted drummer for over 35 years, along the way Douglas Ross started playing mountain dulcimer and the result is fantastic. Two of Doug's original pieces are featured on this sites Music Player. He has two CD's out and one on the way for a 2009 release. Says Doug:
I’d like to introduce myself as a musician with a new approach to the mountain dulcimer. First of all you won’t hear the traditional folk songs normally attributed to these instruments. You are going to hear original sounds that will take you to a place far away from your bonds for just a few minutes at a time, and bring you back a little more relaxed and ready for the next journey. This music incorporates live looping. A process that involves recording a phrase right in front of you, then built upon with melodies and sometimes a few rhythms thrown in. There are no pre-recorded materials, or anything canned here. Just a nice listening experience with a fresh sound that is sure to draw the listener’s attention. The instruments themselves intrigue and prompt many questions during performances. I am excited about this music, and looking for my audience. Please call me anytime at 541-779-3021 for dates.
Flat Five String Band
I caught this group performing at Art Along the Rogue in Grants Pass. My first impression was that the group was a blugrass band based on instrumentation but that was insufficient. The group - fronted at this event by the lovely Sheany Johnson offered classic "30's and "40's jazz tunes and just delighted the crowd. Bryon (Bass), Bryan (Rhythm guitar, vocals), Michael (Electric guitar, vocals), Rob (Mandolin), Linda (Violin, back-up vocals), round out the group.
Frankie Hernandez
Frankie Hernandez has been called "the Latino Stevie Wonder" by the State of Jefferson. His powerful, soulful voice, manic optimism, and catchy and eccentic songwriting have made him an Austin, Texas music scene staple, indispensable touring sideman, Los Angeles session musician, front man and band leader. He has played on stage and recorded with acts such as: Michael Franti and Spearhead, Leftover Salmon, Phish, Seal, Outlawz, Rod Stewart, internationally reknowned flamenco guitarist David Broza, David Garza, The Killer Bees, and Chris Chandler to name a few. Some Main Stage appearances: Oregon Country Fair, High Sierra Music Festival, Earthdance, Kerrville Folk Festival, Falconridge Folk Festival, and Santa Monica Earthday Festival to name a few. His high energy, quality musicianship, and unabashed passion are reflected in every project that he is involved in.
Gene Burnett
GENE BURNETT has written over 400 songs since 1975, and shows no signs of stopping. Covering a wide range of topics and styles, his songs explore the ecology of human relationships, based on the Taoist idea of using less force and following an inner sense of rightness. He also teaches T'ai-Chi along the same lines. Somehow he manages to be funny and serious, cynical and tender-hearted, sweet and edgy, emotional and intellectual, all at the same time. All of the songs from all of his albums, (20 and counting), are available for FREE (donation basis) downloading at his site: www.geneburnett.com
GreenStone
GreenStone is
Joe LaPierre on lead guitar and vocals, and his band mates are bassist Paul Harmon and drummer Sandy Lowery. The band has a cool alt or indie rock sound. The link goes to their MySpace page where you can hear a few tunes. Say's the band…
We are a power trio in Ashland, Oregon. Our music style ranges from mellow, almost psychedelic, to hard edged rock; sometimes, with a hint of reggae - also a few covers. We added some music from older recordings. We are currently working on a full length album and some video.
Groove deVille
I've not yet caught these lads. They do however work steady here in the Valley and bill themselves as "The Tightest Band in the Valley". The players are: Little" Dominic on Guitar and vocals - Jon Ross on Keyboards, guitar and vocals - Drew Burnside on Bass and Chris Garcia on Drums and vocals.
Influences listed on their MySpace page are Classic rock, R&B, soul, jazz, and blues, including songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, as well as original material.
Hamfist
I've posted gigs for this band several times over the last few months. They're a "BIG" group and describe their music as
Americana/Bluegrass/Cowboy/Folk Blast! In their own words they offer - Known for wild-eyed, foot stomping versions of country, punk, early jazz or classic rock, no song is safe from the ’Fist. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll dance till you drop. I can't tell from their website exactly how many players are in the group or as yet give you their names but I have heard a few cuts of their music and it's good and the band just has a fun feel.
Hog Wild
I've caught Hog Wild a couple of times at G Street, these guys are tight, clean musically, and have great vocals courtesy of front man and multi-instrumentalist Dale Visage and keyboardist Lloyd Morris. The band is the areas premier Biker band and will be "the" or one of the headline acts at this years Iron Horse Roundup at Lake Selmac. Rounding out he band are Kevin "the kid" Haapla on lead guitar - Damian on drums and Richard Dosier on bass.
Hot Gossip
I've caught Hot Gossip several times, twice I think at JD's Sports Pub and once at Concerts in the Park in Grants Pass. The Band is good and they really go for giving a show. All of its players are very experienced and they offer some material that most other bands just don't do. They have a great website, linked above and you simply must read up on the band, especially the story of guitarist Tom Quinnin.
House Cats
I caught the House Cats recently at G Street and cornered Cats lead singer and drummer Kevin Materson for a nice conversation. This band has been a favorite on the local scene for some 14 years. While all the Cats are solid performers I simply must single out lead guitarist Dave Vaccher; his guitar work is simply mad, fast, clean and melodic. Dave and John both add harmonies and as good as Dave is on guitar John will switch to the guitar for a set of songs and this expands the bands versatility. Here's a blurb from the Cats...
Bio:
The HouseCats were formed in the summer of 1994. They include founding members Dave Vaccher on lead guitar & vocals and Kevin Masterson on drums & vocals with John Hollis on bass guitar & vocals. Their format is fun, great dance music, including music from old to new rock. They will play all your favorites, with an emphasis on harmonies, a great dance beat, and a few surprises.
Incognito
I've been wanting to promote this group for months. Oh I've had their gigs posted but they had no website or pictures for me to use for a profile but that's all changed. Incognito is an acoustic group - sort of - and a vocal group of rare distinction focusing on three part harmonies. You may know of Lloyd Morris acoustic guitar - and Dale Visage sax and harp - from their work with the band Hog Wild. Add keyboards and vocalist Michael Prikryl and that's your band.
Indubious
Idubious is a Reggae - funk - jam band. I had a listen to the songs they have posted on their MySpace player and those cuts are exceptional. The vocals shine as does the rhythem section. The band is a three piece: Evton B - Skip Wicked and Bobby One Sock are the players. The quality of songwriting and production on their recorded offerings suggests that this band is way above the curve. Their "Reggae" is very up tempo and has really good movement in the bridges.
Jefferson
Jefferson is a Folkadelic - Country - Zydeco - Blues with Soul band. I think of them as one of the best acoustic folk bands I've ever heard. That's high praise but deserved. If you give a listen to the tunes they have on their music player (go to their website and click on music) I think you'll agree. Exceptional harmonies, fine instrumentation and great arrangements. The band is: Stephen Van Tuyl on Guitar and vocals - John Nolan on Guitar, mandolin and vocals - Dave "Smitty" Smith on Bass and vocals - Todd "the Toad" Kaberline on Guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro and comic relief and Ronnie "Fingers" Lankford on Accordian and keyboard. They say they've been working on a new album... I can't wait!
Jen Ambrose
Jen is a regular fixture on the Rogue Valley music scene, you can find her performing as a soloist or with her backup band the Jen Ambrose Quartet or with the classic rock and roll band The Rock Project. Jen plays flute, guitar and sings and is an accomplished songwriter. I have one of her songs on this sites music player (Remembering) and you can hear more cuts at her "Sonicbids" website linked above. She has been a repeat performer at The Rogue Theatre and opened for Jackie Greene, Colin Hay (of 80’s band Men at Work) and for 60’s folk/rock legend Donovan.
Johnny Trujillo
Besides hosting the wildly successful Wednesday jam night at Blondies Bistro and participating in the Thursday night jam at Cedarwood Inn John is the bassist in B Wishes Band - MTVG - the Oregon Little Big Band - Colonel Mustard - Shades of Country and probably a few other bands. I think he knows every song ever written and he sings pretty well too...
Jon Galfano
In Jon we have a truly remarkable recording artist as either a pianist or guitarist. He can be found playing locally at a number of area venues (check the Calendar). Jon's discography now includes two singles and eight albums. His first two, Appearance and Two Sides To Every Story are a combination of guitar and piano cuts featuring Jon's lyrical vocals. Next came the keyboard and piano CDs Gem Mystique - Galfano Piano - Pacific Point Of View - and Going Home showcasing Jon's piano compositions.
His passion for guitar once again takes center stage with the release of his latest three CDs Simple Man, Cascadia and his latest offering Five Crowns (pictured). Each album provides unique guitar instrumentals in Jon's own creative and unique style.
Jumpstart
A comfortable and fun cover act these guys have bookings through the year Jumpstart is:
Beau Berry-Guitar and Vocals...Gary Wade-Bass guitar and Vocals...Rick Elling-Keyboards and Vocals and Bret Barlow-Drums
Juniper Ridge
The Juniper Ridge Band brings you fine bluegrass, old tyme, and country music from the mountains of the Cascade-Siskiyou region on Southern Oregon. From deep roots come strong original sounds created by Ray Miatke on guitar and vocals, David Melendez on mandolin and powerful harmonies, Justin Gordon on banjo and vocals, Brandon Lerda on upright bass and vocals, and Mark Lackey on dobro and vocals. Juniper Ridge has been performing together since 2004 bringing sweet sounds to shows and events around the region.
Karen Lovely
Pictured is the cover of Karen Lovely's debut CD "Lucky Girl" that was released in October of last year. Why it happened isn't offered but her back story tells of Karen ending a 15 year hiatus from music in 2007. Well since then she's become a true headliner on our Rogue Valley scene. She is a blues and soul singer that has not only a big voice but one capable of intimacy and subtlety as well. I've heard a couple of cuts from the CD and it's obvious from the moment she starts singing that something very right is happening. This isn't "good" for a local singer good. This is as good as it gets period.
Her website is linked above - discover her for yourself - you can thank me later...
Kites and Crows
Okay, the quick review reads like this: Kites and Crows is beautiful acoustic riffs, great songwriting and stellar vocals. The band is Mysha Caruso on vocals, guitar, harmonica - Jesse Baldwin on accordion, banjo, mandolin, lap steel and Max Hollenbeck on Drums. As with many of the bands listed you can here their music on their MySpace page liinked above.
Lavender Blue
Lavender Blue might be the hardest working band in the Valley - definitely one of the busiest. A solid cover band, very fun and dancable - it's rare that a week passes when they're not gigging somewhere.
Little Thom
An accomplished musician and author "Little Thom" hosts the open mic each Sunday at The Wild Goose in Ashland.
Lizard Mafia
This IS the MAFIA Baby! This Grants Pass band just celebrated its first year. The band is fun - has fun - and exudes fun. Playing mostly covers the band features strong vocals from Kimi(nick name is Token Girl-AKA "The Brains")who adds keyboards and Robert(AKA "Hit Man")who also rocks the drums. Ed(AKA "Fast Eddie") chimes in on bass and Chris (AKA "Mr. They Will Never Take Me Alive") covers guitars.
Machine
A solid "4" piece "MACHINE" plays 90's and newer rock. Great vocals from rhythm guitarist and keytarist Daniel Curren. On lead and the "Guy Fieri" of local guitarists is Michael Parker. He offers up a great energy. On drums it's Danny Keys and on bass young stud Justin Spilman holds the beat. The song list is fresh and the band keeps things fun.
Major Jones
From their MySpace page...
Major Jones is a Southern Oregon alternative rock band formed in 1994 when the lead singer in our former band's head spontanously combusted. Out of the ashes rose the phoenix that is Major Jones. Kelly Cornett began his musical journey at the age of six on the piano, but when he reached the age of twelve, realized that the electric guitar was cooler. He began playing in rock bands at the age of sixteen and has been doing so ever since. A noted West Coast guitarist, Kelly has won several local guitar competitions, including the 2004 regional Guitar Center's Guitarmageddon. Travis Tibbets has been playing percussion since the age of ten when he started playing the drums in the school band. At twelve, he got his first drum set and rock and roll stole his heart. In high school, his band went to and won the State of Oregon Marching Band finals at Autzen Stadium. He has been in rock bands ever since. No one knows the origins of bassist Matt Mackinnon. Originally from So. Cal., rumours have it that he is the long lost love child of Wilt "the Stilt" Chamberlin and an orc. All we know is that he is a die-hard Laker fan and only plays four strings. All three members of Major Jones sing and play their instruments at the same time! (LOL) We've sold over 300 copies of our CD at our gigs alone, and continue to write new material. We have over 20 original songs at this time. We are a tight, well-oiled machine.
Mercy
Mercy featuring the impressive vocal chops of Lynda Morrison is a band that could explode. There's just so much talent here that to date has been relatively quiet. It starts with Lyndas vocals - strong and soulful and wondrously expressive. Add those to this band of top tier pros and watch out. Mercy is: John Lingafelter - Bass Guitar; Gary Nisbet - Keyboards and Background Vox; Dave Day - Guitar and Vox---- Also: Owen Martin - Keyboards; Jim Sitter - Drums and Background Vox; Mary Anne Dye - Percussion and Background Vox
Mid-Rock Crisis
The Mixers
Excuse me if for a few paragraphs I gush... I "love" the Mixers. They play what I guess is called "Boogie Swing" - it's kind of what Brian Setser - once of the Stray Cats does with his Orchestra. While they play mostly covers I don't know any of the songs they play. What I do know is that I'm having a ball just listening to them.
The "voice" of the band and also an incredible drummer is Mark Stevers - loose and cool he pounds out these complex rhythms effortlessly. On keys is Gary Halliburton - again just cool hitting his occassional leads with brilliant flair. Longtime Valley blues meister Charlie Chase covers the guitar work, clean and efficient and on bass, stand up bass of course is Bruce McKern. Now believe it or not... I'm really just getting started because the real magic of the Mixers is their horn section - it's Rico Salas on Sax and Jim King on trumpet. Having a horn section in a local band is a rarity in itself but to have these two guys knocking out sweet harmonies and mad solos all night long is just unheard of. I'll stop there.
Monk
We have a contingent of bands in the Rogue Valley that are creating a sort of Roots meets Reggae sound. Some are calling this the "Southern Oregon" sound and there may be some truth in this. Monk is a big part of this juggernaut but sadly I've only caught one of the bands in this group and I'm just not up to speed yet with the sound. What I do know is that all of these "Roots - Reggae" bands are working steadily and that is a very promising indicator. Soon I hope I'll be able to do these bands justice but I can't quite yet. Monk is: Aaron Reed (drums, guitar, vocal), Kevin Conness (guitar, bass, drums, vocals), and Neil Mangicaro (bass, guitar, vocals)
Montana Soul
I've known of Montana Soul
for some time but just this week found their MySpace page. There's not a lot I can say about this group yet. Judging from their MySpace tunes they are a sweet bit of country rock - great vocals from Anna Christensen. On vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards and harmonica is Tom Klinefelter. On lead and rhythm guitar and harmony vocals is Ken Bendat. On bass guitar is Richard Cole and Ashland drummers are John Foster and Mike Fitch/ Williams drummer is Abe Perea
The Morels
The time has come for me to share what my personal music preference is. I cut my teeth on early seventies progressive rock. Zepplin of course but even more I was drawn to Deep Purple and Yes and Tull. In the mix but to a lesser degree I followed Rush - Blue Oyster Cult - Styx and Supertramp. What this has to do with the Morels is that of all the bands listed these guys most closely reflect my personal tastes. So, I'm a huge fan. The leader of the Morels is Steve Keim. Steve is well known to Rogue Valley audiences as the former lead guitartist of Leadfoot. In The Morels Steve teams with drummer Sam Gregory and bassist, from Portland Brett Sturgeon.
To give you an idea of where Steve and gang are coming from, the last time they played he touted how the band had worked out a ripping Black Sabbath medley. No not the usual "dance band" offering but what the Morels want to offer is a near concert like presentation of rarely attempted late sixties and seventied classics. It's ambitious to be sure but these guys are very good - they may be the only band out there that could do it.
Mr J
Mr J is a band I've had the pleasure to catch four or five times now. While a steady and entertaining club band what I really like about these guys is that they are dedicated to creating and performing their own original music. Michael Smith is the bands lead guitarist and lead vocalist and also the bands primary songwriter. Jack Hillman backs Mike up with solid harmony vocals and bass work and longtime Valley pro Dan Weaver sets the table on drums.
The bands debut Cd titled No Ordinary Moments is available at: CDBaby it's a good CD and I hear the guys are gearing up for number two.
Natives of Nowhere
Here's a band from Ashland - they seem to have a cool kinda indie vibe, classic influences, and they're workin' it! Here's the description they offer on their MYSPACE page...
We are a band made from scratch.....and that's the way we like it. New music coming soon, original grooves. We seem to get a little better each day, so we have to keep replacing the old stuff. You know how it is. Everything is an experiment. Drop a line. We'll jam anywhere, we probably are right now...
Off the Wall Band
A new Country & Blues band, "Off the Wall Band", is hitting it's stride in the valley. Offering a good helping of Classic Country greats, Hank Williams Sr. George Jones, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Marty Robbins, and others, and some Modern "Top 40" Country also. A little Johnny Winter, ZZtop, Rockin' blues from Mike Pintowho keeps the beat, who also plays drums for "Sinner Boy". Come and meet Gary Joe Carnes recently from the Bay area. Gary Joe has that big country voice he uses for both lead and harmonies while playing a mean guitar. Marty James on lead guitar and Dobro, Shannon Jennings on bass, and Dan Doshier vocals, fiddle, mandolin. Jerry Truppa plays Banjo, and Pedal Steel. You can contact the band for info, updates, and bookings at Off the Wall Music Store 237 E. Pine St. Central Point, Or. or call 1-541-292-0014, kldbook@yahoo.com.
One Horse Shy
One Horse Shy is making a name for itself, a simply infectious group. I posted a video of this group on the website a couple of months ago and I've since had five or six of the Valley's premier musicians comment on how much they loved it. The group is fronted by the delightful and whimsical Manda Bryn. Her vocals and lightness of being really set this group apart. The group offers a "country" sound but not the modern sort of rock-fusion so popular today, they define it as "americana" and that is probably best as this band plays to the innocense and humor of everyday life. While I've only heard a few songs one can't help but love the playfulness of the bands lyrics and the quality of its songwriting. Adding his songwriting talents and taking some of the lead vocals is Cris Kelley.Bassist and mandolin player Mysha Caruso (also of Kites and Crows) adds his vocal strengths and songwriting skills and Bryan Helfrich is the groups percussionist. The recent addition of dobro, lap steel player and vocalist Bob Evoniuk has only strengthened this remarkable band.
The Oregon Little Big Band
At its core the Oregon Little Big Band is Tim Wallace and Michele LeComte. They are the constants yet the band commonly perfoms as a three, four or five piece as needed. I caught them at Art along the Rogue this last fall and they knocked out a tremendous set of "Big Band" Classics. Twice a month the OLBB plays for the Ballroom dance crowd at G Street
Oregon Transplant
These guys are a fascinating mix of sound and activity. They're fun - honest - and rebellious. Their music is a mix of Reggae - Roots Fusion and Hip Hop. There are moments when these guys are performing that are just magical; great music and extraordinary energy. Leading the troupe is Frankie Hernandez adding vocals, guitar, and playing an amazing and lively trumpet - Matthew T. Wells is on Drums, Vox, SFX - Cricket plays bass and adds vocals - Andy Casad handles guitar and percussion - Alcyon Massive adds Vocals, rap, guitar, keys.
Jeff Pevar
Oh, lets see, toured with David Crosby and Graham Nash, did a world tour with Joe Cocker, toured for three years with Ray Charles. Lately he's playing locally with the Rogue Suspects. While obviously a busy and in-demand musician he is often found backing up a number of local musicians when the need arises. Great guitarist for sure but also a really cool guy too!
Pete Herzog
It was the guys in Tallboy that
sent him our way. Pete is a guitarist - slide guitar primarily - and he can be found playing around town at various venues. Says Pete "I’ve lived most of my life in the country on a dirt road and spent countless hours pickin guitar on the back porch. To me the blues have always been more than three chords and twelve bars, sometimes one chord is plenty to tell the story and convey the feeling I’m trying to put out."
Pete also added a song to my music player on the Live Music Page. It's Track 20 - a song called Cold Wind Blues. Check out the tune and catch Pete when you can! You can go to his website www.peteherzogmusic.com or just click his link in the Gallery.
The Purple Heart Band
The Purple Heart Band is a 60's, 70's,& 80's Rock, Funk & Blues cover band re-done in their own way and style, with a few 90's & 2000's thrown into the mix.
They are not new at this they have been playing, all over Oregon & California, doing Fairs, Festivals, Clubs,& private parties for 18 yrs, and they put on a really great show.
Sami (lead singer) is known for her wild and raspy side when doing songs like Bad to the Bone and Satisfaction, yet shows her soft side when doing songs like Unchain Melody, and Wicked Games. You often can find her out in the crowd with her portable mic getting them involved in the show. She also handles booking for the band.
Donnie (rhythm guitar) is known for his unique style doing songs like Johnny B Good, and Knockin on Heavens Door. He also can really make his guitar sing using his favorite toy his wah wah pedal during Sami's song Louie Louie. Besides performing he has the hard work setting up all of the equipment & sound for each venue (except the fairs, & festivals).
Gary (lead guitar) is most famous for his slide guitar playing, in which he won many 1st place awards for. Gary is very talented he can also play the banjo, mandolin & keyboards. He is known for his own style of songs like Pony Blues, Mustang Sally,& Green River, just to mention a few.
The Purple Heart Band is is very fortunate in having a fabulous female drummer, Linda Lou ( known for her long locks of hair) she can play anything, besides that she a real hoot to be around.
When you see "The Purple Heart Band" you will see how much they love playing music, they are always happy and have lot's of fun with each other and the crowd. It's a show unlike any other around.
Red X
A top tier cover band Red X plays it a little heavy, tries a little harder to create a show using lighting and effects, and has a more modern play list than many other cover acts. The other thing that sets Red X apart is the vocals. All three members sing but special note should be made of drummer Tony Mullins contributions - exceptional. RedX is: Rob K. - Guitar and Vocals...Mike Pronobis - Bass and Vocals...and Tony Mullins - Drums and Vocals
The Retro Brothers
Primarily a cover band the Retro Bros are at their core a roadhouse rock band. They give you a hard-driving Rock/Blues beat and never waver. They never "cute it up" with "80's" dance junk or something overtly "pop". It's this that set the band apart - that steady solid hard driving beat and I would note that when they play the dance floor if full - and even though they play a number of rather obscure pieces no one seems to mind. Drummer and sometimes vocalist GT Albrite must be singled out for his work, great chops and dynamics. On bass Roy Duckworth is steady and always in the moment. On guitar and lead vocals Rob Gunderson shines.
Ring of Trees
River City R & B
I don't know where to start with this River City gang. They are mad fun - guarenteed to provide a dancable rhythm and while these guys are great players what really shows is how much they want it's audience to enjoy. Dave Vestny's has stepped in on guitar and vocals, Julie Lee is the signature voice of the group, R. Paul (Pauly?) Olsen is the groups dynamic drummer, on bass it's Mike Bowman and Andy Pimental scorches the keys and ignites a room on sax.
The Rogue Suspects
It's generally a given that the Rogue Suspects are the Rogue Valley's pre-eminent band. The players are all nationally regarded as some of the best in the business. The "Suspects" are: Greg Fredrickson on bass and vocals - Dirk Price on guitar and vocals - Jeff Pevar on lead guitar and vocals - Dean Angermeier on keyboards and voclas and Bavid Bolen on drums.
With a visit to their website - linked above - you can hear some samples of Suspects "originals." I found the cuts offered to suggest "Steely Dan" only dare I say it... better? Funky - complex - catchy - melodic and simply superb instrumentation. They are playing out a lot and their gigs are all posted on this sites Calendar. Don't miss this incredible band.
Big Ron Rasmussen
It's long, long, long overdue but I finally have added Big Ron Rasmussen to the Rogue's Gallery. Ron has been a constant on the Rogue Valley music scene for years, in bands and most recently as the host of the wildly successful Cedarwood Inn jam and too as the host of the Open Mic Fridays at The Dancing Otter. While a fine guitarist with an extraordinary repertoire "Ron" is first and foremost a vocalist with strength, a wide range and solid phrasing. Rumor has it he's got a band forming - more on that soon...
Sequoia
While I don't actually have a link to a Sequoia website I can at least include them here on the Gallery. This group is truly a "family affair". Deb Brinkerhoff handles the guitar work and her powerful - pleasing vocals take the lead through most of this groups songs. On bass is Luke Brinkerhoff and the groups signature sound comes from the inspiring Dobro and Banjo work of Al Brinkhoff. While easily moving through folk, gospel and bluegrass arrangements don't be surprised if the group offers up some a capella harmonies from time to time.
Soul Food
This steady cover act plays classic Soul and R&B with a sprinkling of straight ahead blues. Songs borrowed from the likes of Aretha, the Temptations, Susan Tedeschi, Van Morrison and Joss Stone. Featuring the exceptional vocals of Lori Brown and Shawn Moore who plays guitar and percussion up front - on bass it's Mike Gantenbein. The band has been joined regularly by Brian Scalise & GT Albright on drums.
Shades of Country
"It's a Bluesy, Rockin', Country Kinda Thang....." We know the members of Shades of Country best from their work in other local Rogue Valley bands. In a way "Shades" is Julie Lee's project group. While she entertains us regularly as the lead singer in River City R and B In "Shades" she explores original pieces and a bit more of a country sound which is perfectly suited to her voice. Dave Vestny's - John Trujillo - Paul Olsen and Dan Vaccher round out the group.
Slippery Zipper
A new band - sort of. Rock act Fourplay disbanded recently and Slippery Zipper is the new result. The band features Alan (bass) and Gene (guitars and vocals) from Fourplay. Travis from Whutnot adds guitar and vocals and Billy last of Born Naked is on drums.
The band is promising a fresh playlist of newer tunes, that would be good...
Smoken Rogues
I've got a great shot of the Smoken Rogues taken by NowThen photo graphes but to put it here, well... it would be too small or too big... So, click the link for a look at the band. The Smoken Rogues is a band of friends who have played in the Valley for a few years. It was started by Dave Vestnys to fill some private party and special events one summer. And has evolved into an opportunity to play selected dates in clubs as well. The members consist of Erik Vestnys on bass(State of Jefferson) Paul Olson drums ( River City Rhythem in Blues) Vernon Hixson (Boogie Kats) Duke Davis sax(State of Jefferson) and Micheal Forney drums (Gypsy Soul).
State of Jefferson
Here's a shot of the guys from a Wilderville show some time back. After a couple years of steady touring the guys have been back for a while and are starting to book up for the summer. Possibly the premier area band of it's type, the State of Jefferson incorporates, Jazz, Reggae, Bluegrass, Funk and World Beat with diversified orginal & cover music, carrying a message of peace and love. The band is: Mikey Stevens on guitar, trumpet and vocals - Ryan Redding on bass, guitars and vocals - Duke Davis on woodwinds, flute, percussion and vocals - Eric Vestny's on keys, guitars and vocals - and Joe Ginet on guitars, harmonica, mandolin and vocals.
Steel Monks
One of the cadre of Rogue Valley bands venturing into the "dub", "Reggae", "roots fusion" movement - the Steel Monks formed in late 2008. From their MySpace:
With a prolific song writing energy and unique, yet complimentary personalities among the members, the bands catalog became diverse and energetic; ranging from a reggae tribute to homage to our trials and beloved southern Oregon.
Tallboy
When I first caught Tallboy they were four guys who looked like they just came off a construction site. Their lineup has changed. They are now a five piece and have a new lead vocalist. The vibe the band is offering is that they are better than ever.
Some specifics: Tallboy is "Heavy" They are metal - thrash - meets punk. The rhythm section is Metallica on steroids. In fact Metallica would be a nice soft opening act for Tallboy. The lead guitarist really surprises. He's knocking out these complex riffs like with the demeanor of a guy playing rhythm guitar for a country band. You get the idea that he'd fall asleep if he had to do Santana leads. Now as to their songs: you don't expect the level of rhythmic complexity these guys throw into every song. It's fast, it's tight and every song has several dynamic breaks that just keep you there, keep you interested, and keep you screaming for more. How good does it get when a band fills a club - plays only originals and keeps the crowd in the house... that's Tallboy.
Three
Near the top of my list of bands I've got to catch Three is Mike E Hicks: Drums and Vocals - J.D. Berlingeri: Bass and Vocals and Michael Sidon: Guitars and Vocals. All I have to go on regarding these guys is the great rep they've got and the four songs they have posted on their MySpace page. On those two counts one must assume that these guys are among the Valley's elite.
Two Foot Daddy
Proudly hailing from the Illinois Valley Two Foot Daddy is Dave "too tall" Monsma and Wally aka "the jazzman" Aiken An aside: The photo does not lie. Their music is acoustic driven, funky rock n roll, jazz, country, blues and reggae. Think Jack Johnson, John Mayer, and Martin Sexton with a touch of the Grateful Dead and Ziggy Marley and you'll get the idea.
The duo is frequently joined by Matty J on electric mandolin, Charley Greenwood on electric guitar, Chris Videler of Lavender Blue on drums and a variety of local players just sittin' in.
Where's Tom
Okay they're a punk band - punk bands are fun and these guys have the right attitude. From their MYSPACE page...
Band Members swampy, skeeter, and filthy
Influences Music, Beer, Food, and Sleep.
Sounds Like drunk people playing faulty equipment. except in the basement, then we sound like angels
Zephyr
While they have some 600 friends on MySpace - while their lead guitarist recently opened for the Fabulous Thunderbirds - I obviously have just "found" them. So, meet the band Zephyr. The band is a four piece featuring Jared Masters on guitars and vocals - local guitar phenom Jesse Kennemer on lead - on bass is Justin and on drums it's Barry.
