Just a wonderful story behind Sheryl Fogelquist's Fire Etched Designs. To see her work you would figure that she has been at it quite a while, it's high quality and very detailed. The truth however is remarkable. Just last Christmas Sheryl received a wood burning set as a Christmas gift from her parents. She started playing around with it in January of 2008 and now she operates a booth at the Growers Market in Grants Pass and offers a wonderful variety of products.
Now if that part of the story isn't surprising enough Sheryl claims no other true prior artistic involvements and that's all the more amazing.
Most of Sheryl's work is done on basswood which I believe is the wood of the American Linden. Anyway it is a perfect wood for fire-etching or pyrographics because it shows very little of its grain. She works from photographs that she sizes up on her computer and then works off the photo to create her etchings. Because of this technique she is able to do custom work such as pet portraits. Further she can produce ornaments, wedding plaques, name plates, etc. Also of note are the pendant sized etchings Sheryl does on Tagua. Tagua is a nut from the South American rain forest. It is commonly called palm or vegetable ivory. It's a fascinating medium and purchase of the nuts helps to create a new income source for the natives down there. The hope is that this is one little way to slow the destruction of the rain forest.
